LEED 261: Constructing LEED: Sustainable Construction Management

Have you missed a LEED point because the documentation was incomplete or because an individual on the jobsite made an uninformed substitution? The information gathered by a general contractor – often supplied from subcontractors - can make or break a LEED project.

This session highlights for both the GC’s and the Design Team, the knowledge needed and strategies to be successful with LEED construction credits and documentation. Experts share case examples, trials and tribulations from the field for LEED projects.

LEED 262: Success with Campus and Multiple Building Certification

What if you could streamline the certification and documentation process, cut back on incremental LEED costs, and find clarity and a definitive path when working on a multiple building project?

The On-Campus and Multiple Building Certification Program is a LEED certification program designed to help project teams easily and efficiently certify multiple projects located on one site, under the control of one entity. This program fits any organization certifying a number of projects on the same site or whose project scope includes part or all of an entire campus.

Campus Guidance provides a holistic, sustainable approach to project management and addresses the unique challenges and opportunities inherent in campus projects. Project teams can document a credit once for the entire campus through shared credits to capture economies of scale in the certification process. Implement Campus Guidance for your multiple building LEED projects and streamline your certification and documentation process saving time and money.

Utilize a decision making process to determine most appropriate certification path

Where communities are built, how communities are designed, and how they ultimately perform has a tremendous impact upon the environment and nearby residents of a neighborhood. Smart Growth and New Urbanism are two leading strategies for sustainable design that complement green design in the new LEED for Neighborhood Development certification system. Learn more about these two planning philosophies and how they can be implemented on the project level.

Charlotte County - Building Services Conference Room - 18400 Murdock Circle - Port Charlotte FL

Evolution of LEED: Insights into Rating System Updates: Weightings, Part 1: Process and Methods

Would you rather “do less harm”, or “do more good”? This fundamental question is the basis of LEED’s evolution. In LEED 2009, credit weightings were based on the EPA’s TRACI list to minimize negative environmental impacts. As LEED evolves, we flip the approach on its head by aligning credits directly with positive global outcomes. In the first of this two-part webinar, learn the process behind how key priorities drive current and future development of LEED. Impact categories, prioritization, credit weightings, and point allocation will all be discussed in depth. Upon completion of this webinar session, attendees will be able to summarize how LEED points are given different allocations and how those allocations evolve with LEED.
Session Objectives

Explain the rationale behind key priorities driving current and future LEED development

Understand lessons learned from the process, examining system sensitivity, scorecard diagnostics.

Explain how the weightings process will drive LEED technical development for LEED 2012 and beyond.

PRACT 203: Deep Energy Retrofits
New commercial construction is in the doldrums. Instead of constructing new buildings, many real estate professionals see improving and repositioning existing buildings as an opportunity to create value for an organization. How can these professionals maximize building investment and value beyond obvious and simple efficiency improvements with minimal added capital expenditure? By digging deeper with energy retrofits.

Experts from New Buildings Institute, Glenborough Properties, and Rocky Mountain Institute will share real project data, strategies, lessons, business rationale and financial information uncovered in their research and buildings. Hear how investors and owner-occupants successfully implemented deep energy investments in existing buildings, while achieving big energy savings (50 percent!) and increasing the value of their buildings.

The global economic crisis has shown that the rampant outward growth of most American metropolitan regions is both environmentally and financially unsustainable. With large retailers going out of business and many suburban jurisdictions looking to alter their zoning codes and encourage more compact development, there are many opportunities to create walkable, urban places in the suburbs. Learn how LEED for Neighborhood Development can be used as an urban design tool in appropriate suburban locations to encourage this type of development through certified pilot case studies.

Evolution of LEED: Insights into Rating System Updates: Weightings, Part 2: Results of Point Allocation

What positive impacts do you want your LEED projects to accomplish? What is your strategy to gain more points? The good news is: these two desires are not mutually exclusive. In part two of “Evolution of LEED: Weightings”, the results of the weightings process on point allocation and the evolution of LEED is explained.

We explore the rationale behind key priorities driving rating system development and analyze the impact of weightings on global issues such as climate change, human health, economics and resource use and more. Top credits across each impact category and credit category will be explored to paint a clear picture of how the weightings process works and what the implications it will have on professional practice.
Session Objectives

PRACT 250: Integrative Process: Closing the Gaps between Design, Construction, Operations & Maintenance
Fundamental decisions made by building design and construction teams have long-term impacts on building performance measures controlled by building operations teams. The disconnect between these two teams during the two distinct phases of a building’s lifecycle can be avoided through integration of O+M teams in the BD+C process. Early engagement of O+M team members secures buy-in on decisions. An opportunity is presented for better design and construction informed by those who are ‘stuck with’ these decisions later in the daily building operations. This transforms O+M staff into green advocates, rather than adversaries and can present unique holistic strategy and even budgetary solutions for greener buildings. Design and construction teams also have the opportunity to learn how their decisions have long-term impacts, thus applying that knowledge to future building projects. Addresses the multiple levels of education needed for various stakeholders in order to inform the BD+C process through a deeper understanding of LEED EB: O+M and increase the gap between the two phases of a building’s life cycle.

Show the value of piggybacking a deep energy retrofit onto planned capital improvements.

List the potential value that deep energy retrofits generate, such as reduced energy cost, increased tenant demand, and better ability to meet sustainability requirements.

Identify the key action items of a deep retrofit that reduce or eliminate cost premiums, manage risk, and create value for occupants and owners.

Describe the top five measures successful retrofit projects have in common.

We’ve heard that the greenest building is one that you don’t have to build. A new report by the National Trust for Historic Preservation finds that it can take 10-80 years for a new, energy-efficient building to overcome the negative climate change impacts that were created during the construction process. Where are the intersections with LEED for Existing Building? How does this fit into LEED 2012? Join the conversation on preservation and regeneration when the National Trust and USGBC discuss “The Greenest Building: Quantifying the Environmental Value of Building Reuse”.

A new report by the National Trust for Historic Preservation finds that it can take 10-80 years for a new, energy-efficient building to overcome the negative climate change impacts that were created during the construction process. Where are the intersections with LEED for Existing Building? How does this fit into LEED 2012?
CERT 200: LEED Certification: Summary & Overview Documentation

Projects can be deemed ineligible for certification even before Certification Reviewers look at the strategies and credits attempted. Accurate and consistent summary and overview documentation about a project seeking LEED Certification is imperative. This information can determine if a project is eligible for certification and if the appropriate LEED Rating System has been selected. In the third webinar in the LEED Certification series, we learn best practices for submitting consistent content into LEED Online, and how to correctly calculate baselines.
