SWFL Branch - August Program

Come Tour Southwest Florida’s Only Waste to Energy Facility!

Lee County’s Waste to Energy Facility is one of a kind in Southwest Florida.  The facility processes almost all of the household waste produced in Lee County.  Recyclables are sorted and packaged for shipment in one building while the contents of garbage trucks are incinerated in the waste to energy plant.  Combusting the waste greatly reduces the volume of material that is buried in the landfill (the ash takes up 90% less room than raw waste) and produces electricity for Lee County households and businesses.  Burning the waste also eliminates the need for landfill gas collection systems.  Many landfills have these systems to collect and “flare off” gases with high global warming potentials, such as methane.  Please join us for this exciting behind the scenes tour to learn the final destination of the materials you place in the rubbish!
