Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics (CBPD) has developed an Indoor Environmental Assessment Toolkit (IDEAS), for teachers to independently evaluate the indoor environmental conditions of their classroom and identify areas that need to be improved in order to enhance the classroom environment. 

The session will first review current guidelines that exist for IEQ and those that are applicable to schools. Case studies and research analyses that identify how IEQ affects the health and productivity of teachers and students will be presented. The toolkit utilizes established Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) methodologies. POE includes qualitative and quantitative building and occupancy assessments.  

An overview of the background of POE, its use in the industry, and how it was implemented in the toolkit will be discussed. The toolkit was tested in multiple Pennsylvania schools and results from the pilot case studies will be presented followed by recommendations that schools administrators can implement in their own school environments. The session will also include personal experiences from a school Principal who tested the toolkit in her facility. The session concludes with a live demonstration of the toolkit and instructions for audience members to access the toolkit online for use in their facilities.

  • Discuss the IEQ metrics available in the industry for schools.
  • Recognize the pros and cons of Post Occupancy Evaluation and understand how to carry out an IEQ assessment in a school using School toolkit.
  • Conduct an analysis of SEAT results and evaluate the strategies needed to create a healthier school environment.
