This session will teach building designers how EPDs are used for LEED v4 (LEED BD+C) credits and will introduce manufacturers to conventional and new EPD creation methods. The inclusion of EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) for material credits in LEED v4 is driving demand for both product-specific and industry average EPDs, but the adoption of EPDs has been slow. Many manufacturers believe that creating EPDs is costly and time consuming, leaving building designers without EPDs to apply for credits. Additionally, building designers have not yet gained experience in reading and using EPDs. This status is quickly changing with new EPD delivery systems that are fast, easy, and simple to use. This panel presentation includes an overview of the state of the art in EPD creation and usage from an LCA expert, and specific examples from material engineers in industries that have paved the way in EPD creation and use for LEED v4 credits. Additionally the panel will relate how manufacturers can use easily updatable EPDs to quickly improve the sustainability of their products. After this session, building designers will be prepared to use EPDs for credits and manufacturers will know the next steps for implementing EPDs in their industry.

  • Identify the role of EPDs and other life cycle assessment tools in LEED v.4 and elsewhere
  • Find and apply product-specific and industry-wide EPDs for LEED v4 materials credits
  • Describe how innovative EPD delivery systems can facilitate multi-attribute optimization by material manufacturers and engineers by identifying tradeoffs of material design and manufacturing decisions
