Myakka River Branch Meeting

Presentation:  "Ecomasterplanning -- Turning the Urban Desert Into a Metropolitan Oasis"

Urban heat islands compromise human health, create energy gulfs, corrupt air and water quality, and undermine the competiveness of cities.  Build big and populous, but employ an urban metabolism design model that creates resilient cities and urban islands.

Speaker Bio:  Demetra J. McBride has worked with Sarasota County for nearly six years to create its Urban Forestry Master and Community Energy Action Plans, develop a Green Infrastructure Program, and to support the sustainability training and ARRA-funded programs of the County's Sustainability Office.  She graduated with a degree in international relations from Florida International University and the Sorbonne, Universite de Paris before earning her law degree at New York Law School in New York City. McBride speaks publicly on numerous smart growth topics, and was peer-reviewed by the CDC for a paper she presented at the Second International Conference on Countermeasures to Urban Heat Islands, hosted by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories.  She will leave Sarasota in November to serve as the Sustainability Manager for Santa Clara County, California.
