Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs): Specifying Sustainable Materials to Save the Planet

Climate destabilization and the destruction of our natural environment are adversely affecting our health, communities, and our economy. The decisions we make on a daily basis can help to reduce these negative environmental impacts. Project teams can significantly contribute to this impact reduction by specifying products that have verified improved environmental life cycle impacts, such as reduced global warming, acidification of our lakes and oceans, smog creation and ozone depletion.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) have been gaining fast recognition as the “gold standard” of product disclosures, and designers need practical advice on how to use these tools to improve their product selection process. In this 1-hour course, we explore the EPD, including how it is developed and what information it can convey. We also examine how product disclosures like EPD are recognized in LEED v4, and perform calculations to assess credit compliance. Finally, we take an honest look at the inherent limitations of these tools, and discuss potential strategies for project teams to use EPDs for product specification.

The intended audience for this course includes design professionals who want to develop more sustainable buildings, by using Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) to specify building products with reduced environmental impacts.

This course has been GBCI Approved (0920004245) for 1 LEED AP (BD+C, O+M, ID+C), LEED GA, and 1 AIA CE.

The Chapter will report hours to GBCI on behalf of attendees. Attendees will also receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Course Objectives:

  1. Explain what an Environmental Product Declaration is, how it is developed, and what purpose it serves
  2. Describe how to achieve MR Credit: Building Product Disclosure and Optimization-EPD in LEED v4
