Hillsborough County's Sustainability
Program and District Energy Plant Tour

roundPicture2.png
Join esteemed Pat Bean, County Administrator and Rose   Ferlita, County Commissioner as they present an overview of  Hillsborough County’s Sustainability Program.

Hillsborough County government has been making strides for years to protect the local environment and reduce its energy needs. Many departments have undertaken efforts, such as the Public Works Department’s current program to replace all traffic light bulbs with scrapperPicture3.pngLED lights, and Fleet Management’s purchase of 13 hybrid vehicles to date.

Hillsborough County has also implemented a comprehensive energy savings program within their downtown facilities and has drastically reduced energy consumption since hiring a full time Energy Manager in 2001.  These programs are resulting in savings of over $1.2 Million per year.

One of the specific measures includes construction of a district cooling plant that provides chilled water for air     conditioning for five County buildings downtown.  The plant contains a thermal energy storage system that makes ice at plantPicture4.pngnight when utility rates are lower and are more efficient to operate, greatly reducing the carbon footprint of the County’s          operations.  This plant also collects condensate water from all five County buildings it serves, saving over 3 Million gallons of water each year.  As a result of this program, the County has received the Energy Star Award for 3 of their downtown buildings.

Following the main presentation, a tour will be offered to  allow a insider’s view of the district cooling plant.
