The Greenest Building: Quantifying the Environmental Value of Building Reuse

We’ve heard that the greenest building is one that you don’t have to build. A new report by the National Trust for Historic Preservation finds that it can take 10-80 years for a new, energy-efficient building to overcome the negative climate change impacts that were created during the construction process. Where are the intersections with LEED for Existing Building? How does this fit into LEED 2012? Join the conversation on preservation and regeneration when the National Trust and USGBC discuss “The Greenest Building: Quantifying the Environmental Value of Building Reuse”.

Session Objectives
  • Compare environmental impacts of new versus existing buildings
  • Identify quantifiable benefits of reuse compared to new construction
  • Identify how LEED recognizes the value of building reuse
  • Describe the role of life cycle analysis as methodology for determine value of building reuse
  • Identify barriers to reuse and solutions
  • Describe impact of materials choices in determining building reuse value and benefits

This session will be registered for 1.5 hours of General (Not LEED Specific) GBCI hours as well as  1.5 AIA/CES LU/HSW/SD hours.
