Bay Haven Beautification Day -- Come Out, Volunteer, Make New Friends, Make A Difference!

The USGBC Florida Gulf Coast Chapter is proud to partner with Bay Haven School of Basics Plus, a public elementary school in Sarasota County, to green their campus.

And we need your help!

Bay Haven will be undergoing a phased renovation over the next couple of years, including the creation of new green spaces on campus with an enlarged central courtyard. Team leaders envision transforming the campus green areas into edible landscapes. The program aligns with our Chapter's Vision "to hand the next generation a healthy, self-sustaining Florida."

The intent is to use Permaculture principles and edible plants to transform the landscape and create a self sustaining, abundant source of healthy foods for Bay Haven students. The food forest will also serve as an educational environment for students to learn firsthand about growing food, as well as many other school subjects.

The first opportunity for you to participate in this transformation is to volunteer at Bay Haven's Beautification Day event on Saturday, April 26, from 9am to noon.

We will be planting an area of approximately 5,000 square feet with a cover crop that is intended to organically fix nitrogen and other nutrients into the the soil, while creating mulch to prepare the area for future plantings.

  • Who Should Attend:
Anyone interested in helping with the effort!
  • What To Bring:
Your gardening tools. We particularly will be needing rakes, shovels and a walk-behind tiller ... and any other tools you believe may be useful. In addition to installing the cover crop, we will also be doing some basic maintenance on the existing landscape.
  • More Information:
If you are interested in learning more about this project, please contact Roger Landry, CxA, LEED AP BD+C or Malory Foster, RDN, LDN. We are also seeking individuals interested in helping create a film to document and share the project and, of course, sponsorship.
  • RSVP:
Preferred, but not required.  Y'all come!

We look forward to seeing you at Bay Haven on the 26th to help with this important, innovative project!
